Detective Gil Beach of the NYPD has worked the violent city streets long enough to know his boundaries. Barry Hawkins
Barry Hawkins has worn many hats in his life, which often included writing. He has served several parishes as an ordained minister, taught at the high school, college, and graduate school level. He has a Bachelor of Arts degree with University Honors, from the University of Puget Sound, two Masters degrees in theology and pastoral care, and a PhD in Psychology from the NY Graduate Center for Mental Health.
Born into a family of traveling tent show entertainers, Barry was a professional entertainer and ventriloquist at an early age, performing in various settings, including military shows, club gigs, and television appearances. Later, he served various churches as Pastor, in Queens, Brooklyn, and Orange County, NY. After a career in the ministry, he served many years as a licensed mental health professional, heading government divisions for addiction treatment and disaster mental health. His department won an unprecedented six consecutive National Association of Counties Awards for innovation. He also spent over twenty years as a Red Cross volunteer, serving as a first responder to the Twin Towers Disaster and many other incidents, including fires, hurricanes, and similar tragedies. He was awarded the prestigious Clara Barton Award by the American Red Cross for his service and various leadership roles, among which was his work as Lead Instructor for the Metropolitan NY Red Cross Chapter. He has been recognized with various other awards, such as being included in Who’s Who in America for multiple years.
In addition to writing multiple novels, Barry has published various articles in periodicals on subjects ranging from teaching death education at the high school level to addiction and dependence in the elderly. He has published poetry as well. He is a long-time member of the Mystery Writers of America, and the respected Author’s Guild.
In his spare time, Dr. Hawkins has played in various bands and orchestras and continues to play trombone for concerts and parades. For many years he enjoyed recreational running, completing several marathons, as well as numerous half-marathons, 10K and 5K races. He continues to take long walks over wooded trails.
Barry has four children and two grandchildren who reside in the U.S., France, and Australia. He lives with his wife in the beautiful Hudson Valley of New York.
